Welcome to the Grounds to Grounds Initiative:
1,000,000 Coffees Challenge!
Waste to Healthy Soils: Turning City Waste into Valuable Products.
Atlas Soils, in partnership with the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, Coles, Boody Underwear, and local schools, is proud to introduce the 1,000,000 Coffees Challenge – an annual city-wide competition designed to turn everyday coffee waste into valuable resources that improve our soil and community health.
What is the 1,000,000 Coffees Challenge?
The 1,000,000 Coffees Challenge is part of our larger Grounds to Grounds Initiative. The challenge aims to engage students, families, and businesses across Townsville to collect used coffee pods and coffee grounds, which are then transformed into Humisoil – a nutrient-rich product that rejuvenates local soils and supports sustainable land practices.
Collect Coffee Waste
Schools, students, and families collect used coffee pods and grounds from home or businesses and bring them to designated collection points at their school.
Weekly Collections
Every Friday, Atlas Soils will pick up the collected coffee grounds from each school, which will be tracked using the City Pantry Platform, a Townsville-developed blockchain system that ensures transparency and accountability.
Transformation into Humisoil
The collected coffee grounds will be combined with other organic waste, such as cyclone debris and fruit peels, to create Humisoil, a soil-enhancing product that boosts soil health and biodiversity.
Why Participate?
Every coffee ground counts! Your participation helps turn waste into a powerful resource for our environment.
The schools that collect the most coffee grounds will receive a full Humisoil treatment for their football or soccer field.
Winning schools will host in-class education sessions delivered by Atlas Soils and local partners, teaching students how soil health impacts the environment and how their efforts are making a difference.
In early December, participating students will receive Humisoil Tuckshop Blend as gifts, which they can also use for fundraising to support further sustainability projects.
